Colònia Castells is a neighbourhood of small houses located in Les Corts district of Barcelona. It was built in the early 20’s to house the workers of a near-by varnish and patent leather factory, from which it also took its name. In 2010, the demolition of Colònia Castells started, in order to be replaced by brand new blocks of flats.
Most of the residents of the small neighbourhood are descendants of the factory workers that once lived there. They were born and raised in Colònia Castells. Some of them received an alternative place to live. Others, that were not so lucky, will be left on the streets. They refuse to leave their homes because they have no place to go, and together with a group of squatters that occupied some of the abandoned houses, they are resisting the demolition.
Colònia Castells was an island of rural flavour in the heart of the big city. This is what is left of it.
